Commodore Amiga CD32

The Amiga CD32 was Commodore's third attempt at entering the console market. It is pretty much a CD-based console version of the Amiga 1200.
Unlike their previous attempts, this time they had some success: it was a hit in the United Kingdom, even beating the Mega-CD as the best-selling CD-based console. However, its library was underwhelming, and the hardware was not too impressive when the actual next generation was just around the corner (the far more 3D-capable 3DO and Jaguar came out in the US just a couple of months afterwards). And as a fatal blow, a patent kerfuffle prevented the system's American release. Soon, Commodore's financial situation was too dire and they were forced to close their doors for good.
Most of its small library is pure shovelware, though there are some good games, including conversions from the original Amiga.

Top Gear 2 | Racing | Made by Gremlin Graphics, the same guys behind the Lotus Trilogy, but this time without the car manufacture's loicense. There's three other versions of this game: the original Amiga, SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis, which all feel a bit different from eachother, specially on the sound part. The Amiga CD32 version has arranged soundtrack, with different tracks from what can be found in other versions besides the intro. Worth checking out in all platforms.
It was rereleased on modern consoles/PC as part of the Top Racer Collection (name change due to license issues with the brit TV show smh), but it's only the SNES version. |
