The Playdate is an indie handheld by Panic, a company best known for producing various Mac programs since the late '90s. They're from Portland, so you know this thing is totally hipster. While it is technically a modest hardware (especially the non-backlit monochrome display), it has a unique gimmick: a hand crank as part of its control scheme. The distribution is also different: the system includes a season subscription and you get two new games every week. Also, you can sideload games, and there are hundreds of titles for it, as the development software is free. Clearly not a system for everyone, but if you want something weird, look into it.
