Magnavox Odyssey²

(Redirected from Odyssey²)

The Odyssey² (known as Videopac G7000 in most of Europe, and simply Odyssey in Brazil) is a video game console made by Magnavox (a subsidiary of Dutch electronics giant Philips) as a follow-up to the first generation Odyssey.

For emulators, see Magnavox Odyssey² emulators, and for system information, see Magnavox Odyssey².
"The excitement of a game. The mind of a computer."

The system enjoyed some success, mainly in Europe and Brazil where it arrived before the Atari 2600 juggernaut, but it still failed due to a number of issues. For one, the hardware was limited compared to the more flexible 2600, and the console was big and clunky, with an integrated membrane keyboard that served no real purpose. Worse was a bizarre case of bad management: as their engineers ran out of ideas, the higher-ups at Philips assumed that video games were a doomed fad and intended to exit the market. However, one lone developer continued to make game after game, and all sold very well. The company couldn't abandon the market, but neither would they properly support the system.

They later released a successor, the G7400, but it was a flop in Europe, and the Crash of '83 killed the plans for a US release.

  K.C.'s Krazy Chase! (US)
Come-Come (BR)
Maze Nice Pac-Man rip-off which adds some different stuff. You've got to eat those mushroom things which grow on the maze while avoiding the enemies, which includes a centipede who also eats the mushrooms to grow.
  Pick Axe Pete! (US)
Didi na Mina Encantada (BR)
Arcade/Platformer Think Donkey Kong, but without the big gorilla throwing barrels. You basically run around with your pickaxe blowing up those blue things until a key appears. The pickaxe eventually breaks, but you can get another after a while.
