Cyberpunk games

Cyberpunk is science fiction's edgy teenage son. Rather than cheer for a glowing future, or wonder as you gaze upon the stars, you must look down and face the bleaker picture of high tech, low life. Beneath the neon glow of flying cars, androids, holographic displays, and virtual worlds, you will find society collapsing amidst extreme poverty, oppression, and geopolitical conflicts. It tends to be more grounded than regular sci-fi, but sometimes it does mix with trippier themes like magic or aliens.
The list

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Beneath a Steel Sky | Adventure | Windows Linux macOS others |
You're stranded in a future city where the poor toil in the high towers blocks, while the wealthy live underground to avoid the massive pollution above. Art by Dave Gibbons of Watchmen fame. Now free on GOG. | ||
| Blade Runner | Adventure | Windows Linux macOS |
It is |
||
| D/Generation | Action-adventure | MS-DOS Amiga Amiga CD32 Atari ST Switch |
An isometric action game where you're sent into a corporate building of a bioweapons developer to stop the actual weapons that have taken the building and its inhabitants hostage. | ||
| Deus Ex | FPS/RPG | Windows PlayStation 2 |
The year is 2052, you are a nano-augmented elite UN anti-terrorism agent, but you start to suspect there is something shady about your higher-ups. A groundbreaking shootan/ RPG/ stealth/ adventure set in a world where there is some truth behind pretty much every conspiracy theory. Its design allows multiple tactics, ranging from stealthy pacifism (sort of) to blowing everything up.
Note: there are several "modernizing" mods, check the PCGW page for them. |
||
| Flashback | Action-adventure | Mega Drive Amiga MS-DOS Others |
The year is 2142, and you suddenly find yourself in an alien jungle with erased memories, a gun in your hand, and a holographic message from yourself. A French cinematic platformer with beautiful graphics featuring rotoscoped animation and a good number of vector cutscenes. Widely ported, but the Mega Drive version is the dev's own favorite. | ||
| Ghostrunner | FPS/ slasher/ parkour | Windows PlayStation 4/5 Xbox One/S Switch |
After the cataclysm, what little remains of mankind lives in a gigantic tower, but one of its creators finds she'd rather be a brutal dictator. You are the city's last guardian cyborg, and your sword is its last hope. Super stylish, crazy difficult first person hack and slash, and I mean holy shit difficult. Do some wall-running over bottomless chasms while multiple thugs shoot at you, and a single shot is always fatal. | ||
| Ion Fury | FPS | Windows Linux |
Be a bomb squad cop babe, fight a robotic cult led by a mad scientist. Retro-shootan running on the same engine (albeit updated) as 90s classics Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. | ||
| Mirror's Edge | First Person Platformer | Windows PlayStation 3 Xbox 360 |
The City is beautiful, pristine, safe. The City is a thinly veiled dictatorship where all communications are tampered. Runners traverse the skyscrapers' rooftops to carry information avoiding the surveillance below. And one of them has just been framed for the murder of the city's last honest politician. | ||
| Oni | TPS/brawler | Windows Mac (classic) PlayStation 2 |
The year is 2032, the environment has gone to shit, the world is under a single government, and the police hides the truth from the people while hunting down terrorists. That is, until a cop realizes that she is being deceived as well. A then-unique mix of beat 'em up and third person shooter, perhaps a better Ghost In The Shell game than any game officially bearing that title. The graphics have aged quite a bit, but the action is still very fun. Bungie's last game before Trailer |
||
| Perfect Dark | FPS | Nintendo 64 Xbox 360 |
In the near future, two rival megacorporations are in league with rival alien races, and you're a super spy working for one of them.
The X360 version is included in the Rare Replay compilation for the XOne. More recently it's been added to Nintendo Switch Online. |
||
| Policenauts | Adventure | PC-98 3DO PlayStation Saturn |
An astronaut turned private eye investigates the murder of his ex-wife, and the clues point to a conspiracy at the space colony. A point-and-click adventure by Hideo Kojima, basically Lethal Weapon in space. Japan-only, but the PlayStation and Saturn versions have fan translations. See also Snatcher below. | ||
| Rise of the Dragon | Adventure | MS-DOS Amiga Macintosh Mega-CD |
An ex-cop turned private eye infiltrates the underworld of 2053 Los Angeles to investigate a dangerous new synthetic drug. A traditionally witty and misanthropic cyberpunk point & click adventure. An adult game worthy of being played. The Mega-CD version is unique as it adds full voice acting, but has worse graphics due to the console's color limits. | ||
| Shadowrun (4th-gen) |
Action-RPG | Super Nintendo Mega Drive Mega-CD |
Based on a tabletop sci-fi / fantasy RPG. In a not very distant future, magic has returned to the world. Humans now live alongside elves, trolls, orks, and dwarves - and all struggle under the power of the megacorporations. Curiously we got three vastly different titles at once: the SNES got an isometric game, the Mega Drive got a top-down one, and the Mega-CD got a Japan-exclusive visual novel. | ||
| Shadowrun Returns (series) |
Tactical RPG | Windows Linux macOS |
A cool indie (kickstarted) return to the popular tabletop game, more strategic but similar to the SNES one. Each campaign is a fully standalone game. | ||
| Smash T.V. | Shoot 'em up | Arcade SNES Others |
In the dystopic future of 1999, the most popular TV game show is a fight to death for cash, toasters, and VCRs! A fast-paced top-down shooter with a dark comedy flair, blatantly inspired by the movie The Running Man. But gameplay-wise, it is the spiritual sequel to Robotron 2048. Widely ported, your best options (other than MAME) are the SNES version or the Midway Arcade Treasures compilation. | ||
| Snatcher | Adventure / Visual novel | PC-88 MSX2 TurboGrafx-CD Mega-CD PlayStation Saturn |
In a not so distant future, decades after a biological weapon caused millions of deaths all over the world, humanoid robots of unknown origin start killing people and stealing their identities. A cult classic by Hideo Kojima, with visuals |
||
| Syndicate (series) | Tactics / shooter | Amiga MS-DOS Mega Drive Mega-CD SNES Jaguar 3DO |
In the future of capitalism, you spread your corporation's influence around the world by sending teams of cyborg mercenaries to blow up the competition. The series was rebooted in 2012 as an FPS, which annoyed one of the original devs into creating a spiritual successor, Satellite Reign. | ||
| System Shock | FPS/RPG | MS-DOS Mac (classic) PC-98 |
System Shock is like a cross between Ultima and Doom. The year is 2072, you're a hacker, you just woke up at the Saturn colony, and everyone's fuckin' dead. | ||
| System Shock 2 | FPS/RPG | Windows macOS |
The year is 2114, you're a soldier stationed in a faster-than-light spaceship. You just woke up, and everyone's fuckin' dead.
The spiritual predecessor to Bioshock, but far more complex and difficult; you can customize your character's stats and skills in various ways, allowing different game styles. For example, playing the game like a regular fps without focusing on firearm-skills won't get you far, and you will most likely miss some areas/features accessable only to those with technical skills. If you're a fan of Deus Ex, and scary shit, you may love this game. |
||
| Uplink | Strategy/Sim | Windows Linux macOS Android iOS |
Hack computers. Don't get caught. Decent story, full of intrigue. Bring down corporations and destroy people's lives for money to upgrade your computer while searching for a mysterious virus. Don't let the appearance fool you, the later missions are hard and intense, and the game has quite a few secrets. | ||
| VA-11 HALL-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action | Visual Novel/ Simulation | Windows Linux macOS PlayStation 4 Vita Switch |
Sort of a mix between visual novel with bartending sim with visuals inspired by PC-98 games, you serve drinks while listening to the clients stories, all while taking care of your own life. The history actually changes depending on whether you serve clients well or mess up, as they may grow attached to you and reveal more about the world. |
