Cover Title Genre Description Where To Buy Screenshot
Amnesia: The Dark Descent First person survival horror The next game from Frictional Games, makers of the Penumbra series. For those that haven't played Penumbra, this is a first-person adventure game with a survival horror theme, making excellent use of light and dark, as well as atmosphere and foreshadowing. If you overthink it, it'll lose some of its appeal, so just relax, get immersed, and prepare your anus. WARNING: May cause anxiety attack causing nightmares in girlfriends/wives/significant others whose anuses are not ready. GOG
Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars
(aka Circle of Blood)
Adventure Great classic adventure game about an american investigating a series of murders in Paris which, of course, are related to something much bigger involving an ancient cult descending from the Templars. Made years before all the templar/DaVinci craze. Serious story, but nice bits of humor here and there. The sequels get gradually worse, although the second game is still good. GOG

Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead Roguelike / Survival Horror A skill-based roguelike happening right after the zombie apocalypse, with a dash of Fallout. Lots of character and (eventually) vehicle customization. Item crafting is extensive and basically required. The learning curve is made of dying, and as such, you will die a lot. Survive long enough, and you will be rewarded with great endgame content.
Actually a fork of the original Cataclysm, which was abandoned by its creator.
Protip: If you like shotguns or loud vehicles, use Static Spawn.

Costume Quest Adventure / RPG Note: Best played around Halloween. You play as a kid trying to rescue your sibling kidnapped by troll-like monsters. However, this game has a nostalgic childhood-like feel to it. The dialogue, the attitudes, along with the general humor and plot can really take you back. In dealing with obstacles, you find, build, and use costumes and their abilities to proceed, such as a light-up toy sword to scare away darkness phantoms. The battles are a little simple, but play well enough and are rather cute and silly, being hilariously exaggerated through imagination. The game is a little short, but the DLC expansion chapter (which is included with the PC version) rounds it out nicely. Steam
Day of the Tentacle Remastered Adventure Adventure game with lots of quality art, puzzles, humor and story. Sequel to Maniac Mansion, but DotT is considered by many to be one of the greatest Adventures you can play. GOG
Full Throttle Remastered Adventure In a near future where hovercars are quickly replacing combustion engines, you're an old-school biker, framed for murder and left for dead on the roadside. Full Throttle features an amazingly simple interface and fast-paced action. Brilliant graphics and animation provide a strong cartoon feel, while the voice acting is powerful and cinematic. Players find themselves racing to the finish to help Ben find the bad guys. GOG
Steam
Grim Fandango Remastered Adventure Set in a day of the dead themed afterlife, Grim Fandango involves a Film-Noir style plot revolving around a salesman and a conspiracy in the Department of Death, an organization that helps guide souls from death to their eternal rest. Well known for its excellent in story, art style, music, characters, and dialog, this 3D adventure game is considered one of the finest in the genre. GOG
Steam
Knock-knock! Surreal Horror The latest game from Russian Studio Ice Pick Lodge, and unfortunately also the most poorly reviewed. This is the most accessible release in their library, but this does not detract from their trademark commitment to crafting avant-garde atmospheres with varying degrees of realism and a uniquely Russian sensibility. Steam
Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards Erotic Adventure Set in the fictional city of Lost Wages, the story follows a middle-aged virgin named Larry Laffer who resolves to sleep with a woman before midnight. Land of the Lounge Lizards establishes several elements which recur in later games, including Larry's out-of-date attire, perpetually bad luck with women, and penchant for double-entendres. GOG (original)
GOG (Reloaded)
Leisure Suit Larry: Love For Sail Erotic Adventure The final Leisure Suit Larry adventure designed by the series creator, Al Lowe, Love for Sail boasts some pretty attractive cel animation while giving the gamer even more goodies. There are heaps of easter eggs throughout the game that provide the well animated nudity, the game uses a very flexible and easy drop down menu mechanic and the humour is stronger than ever with amazing voice acting. There are so many goodies hidden in this game from the Where's Dildo mini-game to secrets in the actual games file directory. Leisure Suit Larry: Love for Sail is one of the best adventures of all time. GOG
Pajama Sam
(series)
Adventure/Puzzle Quirky adventure series. Bit for children REAL MEN, but fun in any case. (note: Sam 4 is not Linux native, the others are.) GOG

Penumbra: Black Plague Survival Horror / Adventure Continuing the story, you can expect more of the same mindfucking and puzzles, except now there's no combat, fuckers. Best be learning how to run. Steam File:Penumbra Black Plague PC screenshot 2.png
Penumbra: Overture Survival Horror / FPS / Adventure A FPS set in 2000 where a scientist is led to Greenland in search of his dead father. He falls into a mineshaft where he is only equipped with a flashlight(which runs on batteries) and a glowstick. The game blends a very unique physics element where you must click and drag items to pull them open/closed. Enemies include wolves, giant spiders, giant worms, and humanoid like creatures. Only weapons are a pipe and hammer. Has tons of puzzles. Steam
Sam and Max: Hit the Road Adventure Pretty crazy adventure featuring a detective dog and his partner, a cute homicidical rabbit on their mission to find a disappeared yeti. Puzzles are sometimes TOO crazy, but the game's a lot of fun nevertheless. GOG
The Stanley Parable First-person adventure The tale of a guy named Stanley who works for a company, pressing buttons, until one day everything changes. Very stripped down gameplay (WASD, mouse, and E), but focuses on story. A self-aware deconstruction of video games, but can seem pretentious. Multiple endings, short playtime, but worth checking out for the story.

There are two versions: a free HL2 mod with 6 endings, and the more advanced commercial release with 18. Play the free one first to see if you like it.

Free: ModDB
Paid: Steam
Toonstruck Point&Click Adventure A classic adventure featuring the voice talents of Dan Castellaneta, Tim Curry, Dom DeLuise, Jim Cummings, Tress MacNeille and an FMV Christopher Lloyd who's been sucked into a cartoon world filled with parodies of all types of cartoons. Definitely worth a look. GOG
