	Counter-Strike	FPS	Competitive multiplayer FPS with huge numbers of players, servers and mods of all kinds. May cause rage due to most of the servers being configured incorrectly while running a terrible game. Not quite as fun or lulzy, since the AWP was nerfed. Two remakes/modernizations, Counter-Strike: Source and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, have been released - but the original is still considered one of the best and remains very popular.	Steam
	Descent (series)	FPS/sim	Be a mercenary hired to eliminate the corporation's virus-infected mining robots all over the solar system. One of the first fully 3D games (a whole year before Quake), this is a shooter with "six degrees of freedom" - you can turn 360 degrees in any direction, and there is no clear up or down in these twisty tunnels. If you're used to the linear, cinematic, hand-holding bullshit for wussies they call FPS nowadays, this will be truly brain-twisting. Better have a barf bag handy! Also, use DXX-Rebirth to run it on modern systems at high resolution.	GOG: 123 Steam
	Drunken Robot Pornography	FPS	Get your jetpack and laser blaster ready: you made the mistake of giving free will to your robot bartender and the son of a bitch built an army of giant robots to destroy the city! Unique indie mix of FPS and bullet hell, perhaps a bit "fluff" but still very fun. Quite unique in the FPS genre for having extremely vertical stages. Sadly does not contain any actual pornography. 	Half-Life	FPS	Experiment goes wrong, portal to alien world opens, deadly creatures all around. Excellent sci-fi shooter that's aged decently. Interesting story and combat featuring a variety of military, scientific, and box opening weapons. Varied maps make for a must-play multiplayer experience. A metric fuckton of mods exist for this (get HD2 Pack and ReSrced for improved visuals). There are two expansions: Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Also, Decay is a co-op scenario originally from the PS2 version but fans have ported it to the PC. If you want more, there's also Uplink, a demo of the game that uses cut content not in the original. Alternatively, get Black Mesa for a modernized remake. Be sure to avoid Half-Life: Source, it's super buggy.	Steam
	Half-Life 2 (+ episodes)	FPS	Years after the Black Mesa incident, the Combine rule the Earth and drain it of its natural resources. But the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world. Use the HL2 Update fan mod for tastefully improved visuals.	Steam
	Ion Fury	FPS	Be a bomb squad cop babe, fight a robotic cult led by a mad scientist. Retro-shootan running on the same engine (albeit updated) as 90s classics Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, and Blood. Also famous for triggering the RetardEra snowflakes, which is always a good thing.	GOG Steam
	Killing Floor	FPS / Survival Horror	Co-op zombie killing. Originally a free Unreal Tournament 2004 mod, until someone put a price tag on it. It's a nice alternative to Left 4 Dead. It has more zombie types, and only a few of them are the runner kind. Has classes which get various bonuses and can be leveled up in various ways. It also has hilarious British accents, and the game would be worth buying just for that. LOADS A MONAY!	Steam
	Left 4 Dead	FPS	Co-operative multiplayer FPS involving zombie hordes and an AI "Director" that creates situations intelligently based on the players' conditions and actions. Headshots are superb, and the game can feel wonderfully epic when the numbers of attacking zombies reaches its peak. Casual, but due to being easily accessible for all gamers, lots of unobtrusive hand-holding and non-competitive gameplay make it a great entry point for getting friends and family away from the Wii and into 'real' gaming. 	Overload	FPS/sim	The legit spiritual successor to Descent, from many of the original team. The same delicious labyrinthine design, only with modern visuals.	GOG Humble Steam
	Postal 2	FPS	Survive a week in Paradise as the Postal Dude. Lots of low-brow humor and a contrived, XD-RANDUM story. Very early 2000s references abound. About 10 NPC models, repeated over and over again to fill the map. Good for you Columbine types. Noteworthy for being sandboxy as fuck with tons of exploration and a good modding community; basically Deus Ex meets South Park. Its worth a look even if you don't think putting out fires by pissing all over everything isn't the best gameplay mechanic since mouselook (it is).	GOG Steam
	Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45	FPS	Super realistic first-person shooter set during World War II (I know, I know) on the Eastern Front. Realistic gameplay means if you get shot once, you're probably dead. Emphasizes teamwork, and one really good player doesn't ensure victory for his team. Don't play the game like it's god damned Call of Duty and you will appreciate what it has to offer.	Steam
	Rise of the Triad: Dark War	FPS	A fast-paced, intentionally silly and over-the-top shooter with some plot about secret ops trying to destroy an alien cult, but who cares about plot when you can get hopped up on 'shrooms, turn yourself into a dog, and wield the almighty Excalibat? Also contains lots of blood and fleshy chunks spraying everywhere! Good times, even by modern standards. Fun fact: it began development as a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D.	GOG
	Shadow Warrior	FPS	You're a loyal corporate ninja/bodyguard/mercenary, but when you find your boss is summoning demons from hell to conquer the world, that's a bit too much for you. From the makers of Duke Nukem 3D, so you know what to expect: very complex levels, lots of gore, and politically incorrect humor. A great game that didn't get the attention it deserved at the time, maybe because its tech was a bit outdated. Just use SWP and the High Resolution Pack for better textures and real 3D objects. Had a reboot in 2013 that is almost completely different but also extremely good.	GOG Humble Steam
	Shadow Warrior (2013)	FPS	A bodyguard / henchman / hired killer is sent to acquire a very special sword, but when a horde of demons gets in the way and slaughters everyone before he has a chance to, he realizes there's something weird about his corporate overlords. Remember the 90s classic? Lo Wang was a sort of oriental Duke Nukem, but unlike the notorious DNF, this one is actually a good game... a fast-paced, damn fun, insanely over the top, ultraviolent romp. 	Spec Ops: The Line	TPS	In a near future, Dubai was annihilated by a series of freak sand storms. Months later, a radio transmission indicates that there might be survivors there after all. You lead a Delta Force team sent to investigate, but when you get there, you find there's some real crazy shit going on. The gameplay itself is frequently described as lackluster, but the story does make up for it!	Humble Steam
	Strife	FPS	After a comet hit Earth and unleashed a deadly plague, civilization fell back to a medieval stage ruled by a tyrannical technological cult. Rather than separate levels, Strife has a vast world with interconnected areas to explore, lots of NPCs to interact, and even a rudimentary stealth system - pretty impressive for a game running on good old Doom engine. The original version is supported on engine ports like GZDoom or VaVoom, but there is a modern re-release with improved graphics and multiplatform support.	GOG Humble Steam
	Team Fortress 2	FPS	Arguably the most fun of any multiplayer game with cartoonish graphics and game-play filled with constant explosions and hats pure chaos. Goes great with loud music. /v/ has an active server as well. Free to play.	Steam
	Turok 2: Seeds of Evil	FPS	You play as a new Turok, Joshua Fireseed. You gotta stop the praying mantis looking Primagen, who wants to destroy the entire goddamn universe. Holy shit. Less dinos this time around, but they're still there. Known for its fun gore, great enemy AI, and long ass sprawling levels. It gets real fucking bad by the time you get to the Primagen's lightship. The PC version includes a new soundtrack (same tunes, different instruments / arrangements), higher frame rates (though still capped at 30fps), and PC controls. Also on the Nintendo 64. The original PC version was released around the same time as the n64 version. The version on sale digitally is the 2017 remaster by Night Dive Studios. Its the definitive version of the game in pretty much every way. Includes a number of Quality-of-life improvements, tons of graphical options (including removing the fog), and some anti-frustration features like level warps and objective markers.	GOG Steam
	Ziggurat	FPS / Dungeon crawl	You're a novice in an order of sorcerers, and it's time for your rite of passage: survive a giant maze full of monsters. Fast-paced indie first person dungeon crawler with procedurally generated levels and permadeath. Pretty short, but great fun for multiple runs because you unlock different characters and items each time.	GOG Humble Steam
