Abiotic Factor Survival It's your first day on the job at the GATE Research Facility and things have already gone catastrophically wrong. Before you know it, you're thrust into a chaotic underground lab complex overrun with extra-dimensional aliens, paranormal entities, hostile military forces and all kinds of other hazardous anomalies. The game delivers a fresh take on the survival genre while also wearing its inspirations on its sleeve, with a graphic-style straight out of the original Half-Life and an expansive lore from modern-era sci-fi like the SCP Foundation. Either play on your own or team up with up to five other players, pick and choose perks and debuffs to customize how your nerd plays. Craft ramshackle bases in hollowed-out office rooms or military outposts, held together with duct-tape and 'belief'. Can you get to the surface? Will there still be a world out there to live in? Will your colleagues poop in your soup to make poop soup? Who knows?

This game used to be an early access title and now carries a $35 USD price tag, so if you have this in your library and haven't gotten round to playing it yet, now would be a good time to check it out.

Alan Wake II Survival Horror Ambitious followup to Remedy's 2010 survival horror game that also includes tie-ins to their other games like Control. You play as the disturbed author Alan Wake trying to escape "the Dark Place", a nightmare of his own creation. Interspersed with Alan's story you also play as FBI agent Saga Anderson investigating a series of murders in the Twin Peaks-inspired town of Bright Falls, where the original game took place. Each character has their own internal thought system. Alan tries to write new plot elements over existing environments to help him escape, and Saga gathers her thoughts and the clues she finds to try and unravel the mystery. The flashlight-and-gun combat is vastly improved in this game. The story itself is sprawling and bold that often spirals out of control before tying things back together in fascinating ways. The DLC further expands the ties to their other games.
It was published by Epic, which means it is Epic Store exclusive on PC if that's something you care about.

Dragon's Dogma II Action/RPG Long-awaited followup to the classic Capcom action RPG. Follows many of the same beats as the original. A Dragon steals your heart, making you an "arisen", and you must journey with up to three AI-powered pawns to foil an evil plot. Features a much larger open world and new and upgraded combat classes, but is also more of the same in many ways to the first game, and does not feature a lot of the elements and options that were added to the original via the Dark Arisen expansion. A welcome, if imperfect, follow up. Steam

Elden Ring Action/Adventure An open world Souls game lauded for its exploration, combat, and world design made in conjuction with George R.R. Martin. Elden Ring Nightreign Action A rouguelike spinoff of Elden Ring. Each run has you going around camps and castles in an alternate version of the opening area of the original game, finding weapons and loot to fit your build. You play among a group of pre-made characters each with their own weapon/magic affinities and special moves. Every run is split into three days, and at the end of the first two days you fight a random boss from either Elden Ring or the Dark Souls trilogy. The final day is just a very tough fight with a new unique boss. The layout of the map is altered for each run, with occasional different world events that allow access to better loot drops and more boss fights. Can be played solo or with a group of 3, with matchmaking available if you don't have any friends. A fun asset-flip twist on the Fromsoft format. Steam

Hollow Knight: Silksong Metroidvania The long-awaited followup to Hollow Knight. In Silksong you play as the first game's deuteragonist, Hornet, after she breaks free from captivity from a strange religious group in an unknown land. Hornet is quicker and more acrobatic than the knight from the first game, and as a result the game is faster paced and with a higher emphasis on platforming and quicker combat than the original. The game is also generally more difficult as a result, however nothing is at the level of the DLC encounters from Hollow Knight, though the devs have promised more content in future updates. There is also a more traditional quest structure with set goals and rewards, that encourages further exploration. There is also a large amount of hidden content, including an entire final chapter that includes considerably more difficult challenges and encounters as well as a true final boss. The gorgeous hand-drawn visual style and sense of dread from a world full of destroyed and corrupted beauty is still present. Steam

Hi-Fi Rush Action/Rhythm A lighthearted action game from Tango Gameworks, in a stark and unexpected departure from their Evil Within horror roots. You play as Chai, a hapless aspiring rockstar who accidentally acquires both a magnetic arm and the ability to feel the rhythm of the world around him when a cybernetics experiment from an evil corporation goes awry. Chai, with the help of some allies he meets along the way, must escape the grasp of the corporations robotic minions and malicious executive board. Every action Chai takes is timed to the game's soundtrack, which is composed of licensed music from bands such as The Flaming Lips and Nine Inch Nails. Damage and DMC-style combo bonuses are rewarded for timing your attacks, parrying, and movement to the rhythm of the music. The boss fights and certain mini-bosses also become easier with proper timing. Your companions also can be summoned to temporarily assist in combat, and new moves and upgrades can be unlocked as the game progresses. It is a remarkably deep combat system despite the games more comedic narrative tones. Steam

Metaphor: ReFantazio JRPG A stylish medieval fantasy JRPG from the team behind the Shin Megami Tensei/Persona series. The world is full of various tribes of different fantastical races, as well as different political and religious groups caught in conflict and power struggles. The monsters in the game, called "humans", are esoteric beasts designed in the style of Hieronymus Bosch paintings. Combat is turn-based, using the classic SMT press turn system, albeit while exploring you can enact a real-time combat system that opens both the player and enemy up to initiative attacks. It can also allow the player to quickly dispatch of enemies when overpowered for the area. There is a jobs system called archetypes that allow the party members to transform into these archetypes to access new skills, akin to summoning personas. While not as comprehensive as the Persona games, there is social links and a calendar system to increase the bonds with your party, allowing access to new archetype upgrades. Deep gameplay, an interesting plot, and unique style have made this one of the best JRPGs of its generation. Steam

Neon White FPS/Puzzle-Platformer Play as a demon hunter working for Heaven in this speed-running focused action game where you use "soul cards" that can either be used as typical FPS guns, or be discarded to give you extra movement abilities needed to navigate through the bite-sized stages. The mechanics are quite refined enticing a "one more try" appeal and both the music by Machine Girl and the art direction are great, just make sure to skip all of the cringy anime dialogue to prevent yourself from dying of embarrassment IRL. Nine Sols Action/Platformer Difficult action-platformer with a gorgeous Eastern mythology inspired artstyle that directly cites Sekrio as an inspiration for its deflection-heavy combat. Borrows a lot from Hollow Knight such as it's mix of combat and platforming plus its character design, however it is more linear than a traditional metroidvania. The action gameplay is the key focus, and it is excellent. Steam

Octopath Traveler II JRPG Another HD-2D JRPG by Team Asano. Like the first game, it involves eight protagonists coming together while going through their own individual stories before a finale that unites them all in one. The storytelling is vastly superior compared to the previous game, and characters actually have some overlapping between individual chapters. There are some new additions to the combat and job systems as well that add a little more depth to both. Steam

Persona 3 Reload JRPG A remake of the PS2 game, with gameplay and aesthetic changes that make it more comparable to Personas 4 and 5. The social elements have been vastly expanded so there is more to do in between dungeons. While the battle system still keeping the original press-turn system, it includes more stylishly presented menu options, as well as the ability to either let the CPU control your party like the PS2 version, or have full party control like in the PSP port. Pizza Tower Platformer Your name is Peppino Spaghetti, a struggling Italian pizza chef that has decided to climb the titular Pizza Tower in order to prevent a floating pizza named Pizzaface from blowing up his restaurant with a giant laser mounted on top of the tower. An excellent Wario Land inspired game that has plenty of emphasis on movement, exploration and a score attack to better your rank on each level, the game also features an art style reminiscent of cartoons from the 90s and a killer soundtrack worth listening. Note: this is based on the Saturn/PS1 version. The DOS "classic edition" (also available) is a vastly different game, also good but mostly linear.

Pseudoregalia 3D Platformer, Metroidvania Explorer a giant dream castle as a pantless goat-woman named Sybil to gain new abilities that give you access to new areas. Deliberately looks like an N64 game with choppy character animations and low-resolution blurry textures, but it's appropriate as it plays pretty similarly to Super Mario 64 with equally solid controls and movement. Is relatively short, about 5 hours or so, but satisfying. Itch.io

Psychopomp (GOLD) Dungeon crawler You play as a very mentally ill woman that builds a helmet named "Machine That Lets me Read People's Minds when I Want To" or Psychopomp for short that lets her reads people's minds, it didn't let her read minds but rather it showed a "different" truth to her, and a whole different world that was hidden from her. A psychological Horror dungeon crawler akin to the likes of Yume Nikki and LSD Dream Emulator, you go into different buildings and locations, interact with the NPCs around you (or kill them with your hammer, up to you) and collect a bunch of eggs called "Eggs Of The Earth". Its a short game, clocking in around 4 hours or so, but its absolutely worthwhile to play through if you enjoy the weird funky exploration of Yume Nikki and just Dungeon Crawlers in general.
The original version is free; the paid Gold Edition includes new levels and content not found in the original as well as Steam Workshop support for mods.

Radiant Silvergun Shmup In the year 2520, a mysterious artifact is unearthed, but then it awakens and wipes mankind. The only survivors are the crew of a space cruiser, who have no choice but return to the surface to figure out WTF happened. Improved port of the 1998 arcade classic, adored by every Sega Saturn fan out there, this is a slow-paced yet very challenging vertical shmup with a shockingly dark story and amazing boss battles. Instead of grabbing power-ups and new weapons, you start with all six weapons and they level up as you perform chains (kill several enemies of the same color in a row). Widely considered one of the best games of the genre. Be attitude for gains! Steam

The King of Fighters XV Fighting The current iteration in SNK's seminal fighting game series. Mostly a refinement of the solid KOF XIV, but with the added benefits of graphics that actually look good, rollback online netcode and a 40 character starting roster that now includes infamous and missed characters like K9999 Krohnen, Ash Crimson, the Orochi team and even Rugal. Basically, it's the last retail 2D fighting game that actually feels like a complete product at launch, unlike Capcom's and Arc System Work's recent efforts. Shutokō Battle (JP)
Racing After 19 years since Import Tuner Challenge being released on the 360, developer Genki rises from the grave and resurrects the Shutokō Battle series with a new installment for PC, and its pretty good. Race along the Tokyo Shuto Expressway with a modest starting sports car, and challenge other racers by flashing them to short, intense races where the goal is to drain their spirit bar by increasing the lead distance without crashing, rather than just reaching the end of the track first. Then, gain credits from wins to tune up and rice your cars as you see fit. Rinse and repeat.
